Like a Burgeon

The series Like a Burgeon makes reference to re-living the feelings of a first intimate encounter, making it through the wilderness of awkward physical changes and the perceived innocence of nature.

To photograph the evolutionary peculiarities that encompass the world around us: the minute, the provocative, the pragmatic and the ungraceful. Image making is where I uncover what’s in my blind spot; daily I observe the world around and find qualities impossible to control and measure. In theory, we apply formulas, laws and standards to photography, but in practice, most subjects in nature do not respond the way we predict. It is the pursuit of questioning those principles that my perspective translates into a unique and honest image.

The series Like a Burgeon, came about while I was looking for detailed features of Eucalyptus flowers in full blossom to photograph. Nothing jumped out at me so I turned my attention to the bud right next to the blooming flower. And Voila! There it was, hiding backstage preparing for the performance of its life. A bud, looking rather awkward, just about to transform into the flower we all recognise. It captured my heart and from there on I have focused on flowers on the cusp of efflorescence.
